Model development (M-projects)

The M-projects cover the urban climate model core development based on the existing large-eddy simulation model core PALM, which has been developed at Leibniz Universität Hannover. The model development work packages aim at adding missing components to PALM in order to build a full urban climate model. These works include a RANS turbulence parameterization, several nesting options and an energy balance solver for urban surfaces. Furthermore, urban chemistry and indoor climate will be incorporated in the new model.

Work package Title Institution
WP-M1 Implementation and validation of turbulence parameterizations Leibniz Universität Hannover
WP-M2 Large- and micro-scale nesting Leibniz Universität Hannover
WP-M3 Benchmarking and internal validation Leibniz Universität Hannover
WP-M4 Surface energy budget Leibniz Universität Hannover
WP-M5 Urban radiation and building parameterization Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
WP-M6 Indoor climate and energy demand Hochschule Offenburg
WP-M7 Urban chemistry and air pollution Karlsruhe Institue of Technology, Freie Universität Berlin

Input data and data management (D-projects)

The D-projects are responsible for data acquisition for selected "democities" and simulation periods in order to allow for an independent validation of PALM-4U within Module B: 3DO of the BMBF funding framework. Moreover, the D-projects will be responsible for an adequate data processing and management for the MOSAIK partners.

Work package Title Institution
WP-D1 Processing and preparation of surface data German Aerospace Center (DLR)
WP-D2 Data management and user interface GEO-NET Umweltconsulting GmbH
WP-D3 User-friendly software package to customize output from meso-scale models for forcing PALM-4U, and application studies German Meteorological Service (DWD)
WP-D4 Urban soil water content Ingenieurgesellschaft Prof. Dr. Sieker mbH

Advanced urban planning (P-projects)

In order to provide new innovative techniques and output products for end users, such as urban planners, the P-projects will develop standard biometeorological analysis products (e.g. thermal comfort/stress, UV and pollutant exposure) based on a new multi-agent based system which allows to incorporate socio-economic data into the modeling system.

Work package Title Institution
WP-P1 A multi-agent model for urban residents Leibniz Universität Hannover
WP-P2 Evaluation of human thermal comfort/stress and planning adaptation possibilities in urban areas German Meteorological Service (DWD)
WP-P3 Actinic complex for the calculation of the biologically weighted UV exposure of humans Leibniz Universität Hannover
