Description: The animation shows the temporal behaviour of the potential temperature in a vertical cross section for the top of a typical convective boundary layer and a slightly stable stratified free atmosphere across, flowing with a steady speed of 5 m/s. At the transition between the well mixed boundary layer and the free atmosphere strong gradients occur with structures that are strongly variable in space and time. At this transition exchange of the stable stratified air with the well mixed layer below occur leading to a deepening of the boundary layer.
