11</h3><p style="line-height: 100%;">PALM is able to
12output
13data of different quantities as time series,
14vertical profiles (usually horizontally averaged), two-dimensional
15cross sections or <font color="#000000">3d-volume data.</font>
16Depending on the kind of output (time series, profiles, etc.) and the
17output format (ASCII&nbsp; or binary) data are written
18to different files (file descriptions can be found in
19<a href="../app/chapter_3.4.html">chapter
203.4</a>). By default, all data
21output files are in NetCDF format (link to the NetCDF documentations in
22the Internet and on the PALM homepage), which can be processed by many
23public domain and commercial (graphic) software. Data from NetCDF files
24can also be easily read from FORTRAN programs provided that a NetCDF
25library is available. More detailed informations about the
26PALM-NetCDF-output is given in the next subchapter (<a href="../app/chapter_4.5.1.html">4.5.1</a>).</p>
27<p style="line-height: 100%;">Due to historical reasons,
28PALM can also
29output data in other formats suitable for some special graphic
30software. The exact format of these files corresponds to the
31requirements of the respective software. Still available at IMUK are <a href="http://www.muk.uni-hannover.de/institut/software/profil_beschreibung.html">profil</a>
32(time series, profiles), <a href="http://www.muk.uni-hannover.de/institut/software/iso2d_beschreibung.html">iso2d</a>
33(2d cross sections) and <b>AVS</b> (e.g. iso-surfaces of
343d volume
35data). The special files created by PALM can be directly used
36as input files for these plot programs. Beyond that, <b>profil</b>
37and
38<b>iso2d</b> need additional information
39about the plot layout (e.g. titles, axes labels, arrangement of the
40coordinate systems, etc.) provided by so-called parameter files<font color="#800000">.
41</font><font color="#000000">Thes</font>e
42files are also created by
43the PALM, providing a default layout (e.g. plots produced by <b>iso2d</b>
44show. only isolines and no color shading). Within certain
45limits the plot layout can be steered by some PALM parameters.
46Beyond that the user can edit the parameter files created by PALM and
47change, supplement or remove the given default values
48according to his needs. Beside the file with the (binary) data to be
49visualized, <b>AVS</b> additionally needs a file with
50coordinate information (likewise binary) and an ASCII file in the
51so-called FLD format, which describes the structure of the two binary
52files. Coordinate and FLD file are also created by the PALM. However,
53with <b>AVS</b> (differently than with <b>profile</b>
54or <b>iso2d</b>)
55the plot layout must always be additionally designed by the user
56with the help of the AVS network editor. &nbsp;</p>
57<p style="line-height: 100%;">In the following
58subchapters, steering
59of the different data output and how to create plots of the data is
60described by some examples. Not all details of steering
61are mentioned. If necessary, these can be found within the
62description of the respective parameters.<br>
63</p>&nbsp;For most purposes it should be sufficient to read <a href="../app/chapter_4.5.1.html">chapter 4.5.1</a>
